Park Guell

Park Guell - detailed description

Barcelona has one of the most beautiful parks of the city, the Güell Park, which covers an area of 62 hectares. The idea of creating a garden city in the area was originally conceived in 1900 by Eusebi Güell. It was Antoni Gaudi himself who was to take care of it. But the project turned out to be unsuccessful, as only two people were interested in the plots on the territory. There were different reasons for that, either they didn’t want to live on the outskirts of the city or they didn’t have enough money for everything.

A little history of the park itself

In 1901 active works on creation of the park started. All this took place in three stages:

  1. The slopes of the hill were fortified and fully landscaped.
  2. Quality access roads were created.
  3. Walls were erected and pavilions created.

Eventually they wanted to create several houses on plots that had already been sold and to create the famous parapet bench, which wrapped around a large square. It was Gaudi who was in charge at the time, and numerous workers were involved in the process.

Shards of decorative tiles, broken crockery and other rubbish were all that the workers had to collect. And out of all this was laid the parapet itself and the stairs that led up to the terrace.

This was how the rubbish collage was created, and over time many architects drew on this experience to create true masterpieces.

Architecture and fantasy of the park

The mosaic lizard deserves special attention and acts as a symbol of the city. The entrance to the park looks magnificent, flanked by large gingerbread houses.

There’s also a hall on the hillside, adorned with 86 columns. And even here splinters are used, but now in bright blue. They were used to frame the vaults. The acoustics in the hall itself are excellent, and musicians often play here. The last thing Antonio has done in the park is an elaborate system of paths and roads, and it is interesting and even pleasant to walk around and hide in the shade of the majestic trees.

There are various infrastructures and places for children and adults, and even couples, throughout the area. You can have fun with your family or friends, your significant other, and so on.

And it is important to note that it is very easy to get to the park itself and you can do so either by car or by public transport or metro.

As for tickets, you can either buy them online or already on the spot at the ticket office. But that’s only in the central area. In other areas, however, you can walk for free.

It is important to note that the park is always open, regardless of the time of year, but the schedule depends a lot on the season. In other words, there’s plenty to see and do at any time.
