Cave of Altamira

Rock art of Altamira Cave

There are many caves around the world where there are rock paintings from different eras, but the Altamira Cave is considered the most famous, where the drawings are attributed to the Paleolithic times. This place is located in northern Spain, near the city of Santander. The discovery dates back to the 19th century, and at the end of the last century, work was carried out on applying artistic painting. As for the drawings, they are attributed to 35,000-13,000 BC.

Real discovery

The cave is located on the territory that previously belonged to Count Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola. It is this person who is considered the one who first discovered amazing drawings on his own vaults. But in fact, everything was done by his daughter, who was only 9 years old. When he first got inside the cave, he saw drawings from above.

Many scholars have spoken of some inconsistencies and falsification of the drawings. For a long time they argued about the authenticity, there were doubts that the images were straight from the Stone Age. Scientists had an opinion that at that time people were not so developed and could not create a real masterpiece inside the cave, where there was practically no light.

Only after the count’s death was it confirmed that this was indeed a great discovery. And images of this kind were found in various parts of the world, both in Europe and in Asia.

Style

Most attention in the cave is attracted by one of the ceilings, the area of which occupies about 100 square meters. More than 20 animals are depicted on its surface, and as an addition, there are also drawings on the walls.

And now experts say that the firm hand of the artist is visible, who did everything in single lines and without amendments. And at the same time, natural paints were used in the work, for example, coal and choir, hematite and so on. And even with the limitations, the resulting images are truly amazing.

Because all the drawings are applied on a relief surface, a feeling of volume is created. And when the fire burns, shadows begin to run along the walls, and it seems that the animals are really alive and can move.

The atmosphere of the cave and its drawings are recreated in the museum, where everyone can come to admire the art of that time. At the same time, you can find out how the Altamira cave looked at the time the drawings were created on its surfaces. And you can learn about the traditions of the ancient tribes that inhabited Europe at that time. An important feature is precisely the exact copy of the painting in three-dimensional display, so that everyone can fully experience the atmosphere of that period and view the drawings without restrictions.
