Castillo De Colomares

the castle of Castillo de Colomares

In the province of Malaga stands the notorious Colomares Castle, which is considered one of the most popular and often placed throughout the region. It belongs to the territory of one of the resort towns of Benalmaden. And by right this place can be called one of the most famous for tourists. The castle is dedicated to the man who discovered America, and part of the history of the New World can be traced there.

And the peculiarity of this place is that the appearance of the castle is not the work of a great master or a famous person. The whole idea belongs to a simple doctor of medical sciences. He has no special education, but simply knowledge that affects both architecture and history. He had only 2 assistants, with knowledge of how to lay bricks. And the idea was really unusual, as there was a desire to create a unique building that competed with other places of interest. But it was necessary to create everything so that it was possible to trace the path of Columbus.

The construction process began in 1987, and it all ended only 7 years later, on the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. In the end, we got an openwork castle with an area of about 1.5 thousand square meters. And statistics show that this is the largest monument to Christopher Columbus, and not only in Spain, but throughout the world.

Initially, after the opening, the castle was used for falconry. But after a while, this idea was abandoned, because cats began to disappear often, and it became clear what was the reason. For some time the castle was closed, but after that it began to actively gain popularity not only among the local population, but also among tourists. Of course, this place does not have any historical value, but this place will appeal to every person, regardless of age.

A bit about architecture

Even with the naked eye it can be seen that several architectural stylistic directions are used at once:

  1. Arabic.
  2. Gothic.
  3. Romanesque.
  4. Byzantine.

But all this is carefully thought out, because the building immediately combines 3 medieval periods that Spain experienced, namely:

  1. Christianity.
  2. Islam.
  3. Judaism.

In this case, stone, glass and wood were used, and here, too, all materials were selected so as to show the events that influenced the course of history in the country.

One of the central places of the entire composition is given to the ship of the discoverer “Santa Maria”. After all, it was on it that Columbus made his way and discovered a new continent.

There are also 2 houses on the property. For example, the House of Aragon has a dome with the Star of David, while the House of Castillo-Leon is made in the Castigliano style and speaks of the unification of states. Of course, throughout the castle there are a lot of beautiful elements and objects, which is the reason for the huge interest from tourists.
